Ai Squared Joins the App Race

by Rebecca White on January 25, 2011

Picture of the iPhone with an app with a big question mark insideSo. You may have heard the chirps of some little birdies on the internet, but just in case you haven’t, Ai Squared is Going Mobile. Now, try not to throw your computer out the window just yet – we are not taking ZoomText itself onto the mobile platform; there are just too many great features in ZoomText for mobile devices to handle them all! However, we have been hard at work on a mobile application that will help anyone who needs a little visual assistance. We’re working out the last little details of some really great functions, and if you’re lucky enough to attend ATIA in Orlando later this week, chat with one of us in our booth to get some more information and even catch a glimpse of it.

A whole bunch of our team will be ATIA – Dave Wu, CEO; Scott Moore, VP of Marketing; Doug Hacker, VP of Business Development; Cathy Gettel, Dealer Network Manager; Derek Bove, Product Specialist; and Becca Proskin, Marketing Specialist – so be sure to stop into Booth #312 and see what we have up our sleeves!

If you’re interested in being kept in the loop with all the details and the release date, send an email to Becca asking to be added to our customer list.

And don’t forget to stay tuned to our blog as well!

Any chance of releasing a similar app on Android?

  • Brick38077

Will Android and Windows Phone 7 be supported. The only accessibility feature Windows Mobile Phone has is for deaf. I would like to see a screen reader for the Windows Phone.

  • http://www.aisquared.com Becca Proskin

    Hey everyone,

At this time we’re focusing on the iOS platform with the iPhone, iPod, and potentially the iPad in the future. We have no timetable on plans for developing a Droid version of the app, but if there’s anything on the horizon we will let people know. There are a multitude of Android phones with differing hardware capabilities, that coupled with the size of the iPhone App Store market made our decision to focus on this platform first.

And just to reiterate, this isn’t a screen reader/magnifier for the phone. This is an app that will allow access to printed material – you can zoom in, apply color filters or take a picture of text and it will analyze it, pull out any text it recognizes, and read it out loud.

This is what I have been waiting for. I purchased an IPhone. I ONLY NEED MADNIFICATION NOT SPEACH. THE ZOOM IS TOO MUCH FOR ME. THERE DOES NOT SEEM TO BE A WAY TO AJUST IT. EVERYONE SAID THE IPHONE I WAS THE MOST ACCESSIBLE. IT IS NOT FOR THE VISUALLY IMPAIRED WHO ARE SIGHT USERS ONLY AND ONLY NEED MAGNIFICATION. APPLE’S ZOOM FEATURE IS WORTHLESS TO ME.

I ONLY HOPE THIS WILL WORK ON E READERS AS WELL. I WANT TO PURCHASE AN E READER BUT I AM CONCERNED ABOUT THE FONT SIZE NOT READIBLE FOR ME.
    KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK!

  • Derek Bove

    Hi JDUVALL,

Just a reminder that ZoomReader isn’t the same thing as ZoomText on your PC – its a combination video magnifier and reader, which uses the iPhone camera to take a picture of something and read it back to you with synthesized speech. It will only magnify what the camera is looking at.

You can adjust Zoom on the iPhone, its a little tricky, you need to double tap with three fingers on the screen and on the second tap, hold your fingers on screen and move them up or down to adjust the magnification level.

We’d love to be able to provide ZoomText on the iPhone but unfortunately its not something we can accomplish on these platforms.

    Regards,
    Derek

Is this (ZoomText) app only avaible for Iphone & Ipods? If so, how long do you think it will be before this app is avaible for other if not all cell phone carriers?

    Sonya

  • Derek Bove

    Hi Sonya,

ZoomReader is going to available on the iPhone 4 and iPod touch, and is a combination video magnifier and reader, meaning you can use the iPhone/iPod camera to take a picture of something, magnify it, as well as have it read back to you.

You don’t need a cell phone carrier if you have an iPod touch, and can even buy an iPhone 4 without a contract. Verizon just recently picked up the iPhone so that is available on Verizon and AT&T.

    Regards,
    Derek

Will there be any video demonstrating us how this app works so that we can have an idea how it works and looks?

  • http://www.aisquared.com Becca Proskin

Yes, we have a video up in a couple of places. You can check it out at mobile.aisquared.com or in this more recent blog post (http://bit.ly/gpgIW0). It’s also up on our YouTube page if you’d rather watch it there: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5GcOXfNnovY.

Now! U can look up on product on this link. U can go ahead to click product there. there will show u product lists!

  • http://www.aisquared.com Becca Proskin

The iPhone comes with a built-in screen magnifier called Zoom along with the built-in screen reader VoiceOver.  We don’t have plans to create a mobile version of ZoomText at this time – we’d love to be able to provide ZoomText on the iPhone but unfortunately its not something we can accomplish on these platforms.

  • Teena Mcewen

There is nothing out there at the moment that helps visually impaired with androids.  We need zoom text as an app urgently.
