Want To Be in a BBC Documentary?

by Rebecca White on March 24, 2011

Cartoon image of a reel of film; the film is twirling out of the reelAlex Foreman recently commented on one of our blog posts and she really intrigued me.  She wrote to us from the UK-based production company called Twenty Twenty – they’re making a documentary for the BBC on parenting, looking specifically to highlight a family raising a teenager while being visually impaired.  And if you’re an avid reader of our blog, you know that we have had several posts about low vision parenting.

She happened to come across our website and was so inspired by all the people she saw on there and the activities they do, and I wondered if their project might be something we would be interested in getting involved in.  So, we’re sharing this amazing opportunity with you – our loyal readers.

Twenty Twenty Productions is looking for inspirational role-model parents, where one or both parents have a visual impairment or are blind, to take part in their ongoing documentary for the BBC about parenting teenagers.  In order to get a full picture of different types of parenting techniques, and fairly represent all groups, the BBC is looking for families that are living with a disability yet continue with their everyday life in a positive manner.

They are looking for families who have at least one teenager between 13 and 19 who are proud of their strong parenting and family values.  The program consists of sending two difficult British teenagers to stay with a family oversees for a week in either April/May/June.  By living in a disciplined yet loving environment, the hope is that these kids will have experiences that force them to look at their own lives, and then make positive changes that could last a lifetime.  The British teens will be expected to attend school, complete homework and help with household chores; they will not be guests in the house but new members of the family.  All expenses are covered.

They are on quite a tight deadline and would love to find interested families as soon as possible!  Any help is greatly appreciated.  If you have any questions at all or would like to participate, email a brief description of your family and all your contact information to alexforeman@twentytwenty.tv or if you’d rather, you can call her at 011 44 207 424 7739 and she’ll call you right back.

Maybe we’ll end up seeing you in a BBC documentary!
