Last year, I blogged about a new restaurant experience that was coming soon in New York City – one where everyone dines in the dark and is served by waiters who are visually impaired or blind. Dans le Noir? is now open for business! Here’s what they have to say on their website:
“Dinner in the total darkness, guided and served by blind people, is a unique experience that changes our perception of the world by reversing points of view. A visit to Dans le Noir? is not just dinner, it is a sensorial, social, and human experience.
First, your senses will be awakened, as you are allowed to completely re-evaluate your perception of taste, smell, and texture. It is a social experience, in which the darkness protects you from your inhibitions and frees you to experience relationships and interactions without prejudice or preconception. Finally, it is a richly human experience when the blind become your eyes, opening your mind to an intriguing new world of mystery and sensation. “
If I am ever lucky enough to get a reservation, I know I’ll go with one of the surprise menus – all you do is tell the waiter things you cannot eat and they create a 3-course dining experience for you. Whenever I watch the “chef-testants” on Top Chef go through the blind taste test, I love to imagine myself in that position (and of course, since this is my own little dreamworld, I totally ace the test) so this is right up my alley. Plus, I do love a good surprise.
Have you been to this restaurant? If so, let us know how it was!
