Weighing in on Windows 8

by Maurie Hill on January 23, 2013

Picture of a computer running Windows 8Report cards on Windows 8 vary like the wind, and so do opinions among the blind and visually impaired community.  But at least we have a place to listen to different perspectives, specifically from a low vision standpoint.

The latest High Contrast podcast produced by Serotalk was created in my absence.  It’s just as well because I have not really played around with Windows 8 much (ZoomText will be releasing a new Windows 8 version in late spring).

Meanwhile, Rodney, Jeremy, and Joe weigh in with their impressions on Windows 8 from the visually impaired perspective, something you can’t always get from an in-store salesperson.  Listen to High Contrast Episode 7, and the Windows 8 SPN Special, to get the scoop.  They will help clarify all the new hardware and software terminology – Windows 8, Windows RT, the ARM processor, and Windows Surface.  You’ll be so much the wiser when entering a sales floor full of new shiny screens beckoning your wallet.

    HI maurie,
Could you direct me to an update of your progress since your clinical trial in July 2012? If you would contact me via email, that would be great. My address is jkresich@yahoo.com

Maurie, thanks for this Windows 8 post. I just got a low priced model computer last year with Windows 7 and I’m thinking of upgrading to a new computer. Fortunately the Windows systems in general are similar to one another but there’s always some new issue that can drive me crazy.

    Hi Joan,
I had my 6 month appointment in early January. Although the doctor hadn’t looked through all my results yet (I get some of the testing the day after I see him), it didn’t look like there was any significant change to report. It is still too early in the study overall (number of people treated) to predict what could still happen. But it’s certainly good news that the treatment is safe and did me no harm. Let’s hope that more data and more people treated of varying progression will yield more predictable results someday.

I”m using a MAC right now with the new ZoomText for Mac. Switching from Windows to Mac is certainly mind boggling. This is when I dream of having a tutor over my shoulder to tell me what to do. My goal is to give up the mouse, so I’m trying to learn all the keyboard shortcuts, which I never really learned in Windows either.

Yes, it’s an awful think to stare at the screen wondering how to perform a very simple function!
