ZoomText Improves Accuracy for New York Presbyterian Hospital’s Medical Staff

In the Fall of 2007, New York Presbyterian Hospital rolled out a new clinical application for the entire medical staff to use to keep track of all patient records. The screen space required to use the Electronic Medical Records (EMR) software was very large, encompassing multiple windows of information. This forced the staff to run their monitors at a very high resolution, shrinking the size of all text displayed. Unfortunately, the information displayed was so small that it became very difficult to read.

Many of the nurses expressed concern as they were very uncomfortable with the way the information was presented on screen. The information on screen is critical and if read incorrectly, it could have disastrous results – if prescriptions were given incorrectly or the dosage was off, it could lead to injury and even death among their patients.

The ball was set in motion and steps were taken to reduce these types of errors. The solutions proposed by the EMR software manufacturer were inadequate, and it was soon obvious that a magnification solution was needed to make everyone’s jobs easier, increase productivity, and reduce these costly errors even further.
ZoomText was chosen from the competition and Ai Squared began creation for a custom version of ZoomText for New York Presbyterian. An MSI installer was created which provided a custom ZoomText installation that could easily be used within their application deployment system. This created a lightweight, distributable ZoomText package that the hospital could install effortlessly on any machine without the need of human intervention.

Right now, ZoomText is implemented on any staff member’s computer who requests it. No issues have arisen in using ZoomText in conjunction with the clinical application. In fact, many service desk requests regarding vision and screen resolution have been addressed by using ZoomText. The staff, especially those with vision impairments or even those who wear glasses, has been thrilled with the results. ZoomText allows the medical staff to work faster and more comfortably in their computing environment, in a workplace where accuracy and precision is key.
