Hi everyone,

Not so much a 'problem' I'm having, but a couple of suggestions around the:

Speech initialization failed. Continue without speech? [Yes / No]

message which appears in certain circumstances. It seems strange that the program does not attempt to load the magnification component before displaying this error, as if you rely on magnification (which presumably most Zoomtext users do), then you will have trouble reading the error message without it being magnified...

At my workplace, we have (for various reasons) some computers with Zoomtext 9.1 and some with Zoomtext 8.1. My usual computer has 9.1, but when I log in to my account on a computer with 8.1, it obviously must try and load something from the newer version (though strangely not my settings), and so comes up with this message. That in itself is not a problem, I just thought I'd make the suggestion about trying to load magnification before displaying the message. obviously if the magnification component won't load either, that's a different story.

Another thing might be that, as I don't generally have speech turned on, it would make sense for the program not to load that component unless I tell it to turn speech on, as otherwise, it's just wasted memory.

Regards

Quentin.

Hello Quentin,

You may want to see if any of the following may help with the Speech initialization failed message. Thanks.

Solution #1 - Delete L&H RealSpeak:

1. Click the Start button.
2. Choose Run.
3. Into the Open box, type
regedit
4. Click the OK button.
5. Double click HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE.
6. Double click Software.
7. Double click Voice.
8. Double click TextToSpeech.
9. Click Engine.
10. With the word Engine highlighted, look at the right-hand section of the Window.
11. There are two columns of information. The left-hand column is titled Name.
12. Right click on L&H Realspeak, or ScanSoft.
13. Left click on Delete, close and reboot computer.

Hi James,

Thanks for that, I'll see if I can try that (though I suspect the way the PCs are locked down by our IT dept, that I'd need to get one of them to do it).

My comment was actually more \"Wouldn't it make more sense for ZT to try and load magnification BEFORE asking me (without magnification) whether I would like to continue\", as that way, I would have a better chance of being able to read the error message in the first place.

Regards

Quentin.

I've faced the same thing many times. I ended up making ZT run in the Administrator account via a 'run as'. I suspect there are keys in the Current User profile that are needed but haven't found them yet.

Perhaps the ZT need to be installed as the user with temporary admin privileges? I can't test since our IT policies forbid using temporary privilege escalation for installations.

I will try the above mentioned 'key' next time however.

I do agree with the way the error message pops up - without magnification. I've gotten panic calls from my users thinking ZT is dead!

Hi,
Another message that should be magnified is:
Would you like to run ZT in Administrator Mode? YES NO
(I am using VISTA.) I don't remember when it comes up!
