KB: Running ZoomText Xtra (v7) and JAWS in Windows XP, 2000 or NT 4.0

KB#: 037
Last updated: March 01 2006

The information in this article applies to:

  • ZoomText Xtra (version 7)

ZoomText Xtra (v7) and JAWS can co-exist in Windows XP, 2000 and NT 4.0; as long as ZoomText is installed first. In Windows XP you must be running ZoomText 7.11 or later. In Windows 2000 and NT 4.0 you must be running ZoomText 7.10 or later.

To install ZoomText and JAWS in Windows XP, 2000 or NT 4.0

  1. If JAWS is already installed on the system, remove it by running the JAWS uninstall program, then reboot the system.
  2. Install ZoomText and reboot the system.
  3. Install JAWS and reboot the system.

When installed in the order described above, ZoomText and JAWS can be run independently or at the same time.

What happens if ZoomText is installed after JAWS?

If ZoomText is installed after JAWS, the following error may occur (during the installation):

"There was an error installing the ZoomText Display Driver. Setup will be aborted.";

When this error is encountered, the following procedure must be performed to correct the problem and properly install ZoomText and JAWS. Read these instructions completely before executing the procedure.

  1. Uninstall ZoomText and reboot the system.
  2. Uninstall JAWS for Windows and reboot the system in Safe Mode.
  3. Delete any remaining JAWS display driver files:
  • From the Windows Start menu, select Search > For Files or Folders...
  • In the field named "Search for files and folders named:", type in: JFWVID.*, then click Search Now.
  • If the search finds any matches, delete them. There are usually two matches: JFWVID.DLL and JFWVID.SYS.
  1. Reboot the system normally (not in Safe Mode)
  2. Uninstall and reinstall the system display driver. This is done using the Display applet in the Windows Control Panel.
  1. From the Windows Start menu, select Settings > Control Panel > Display.
  2. In the Display Properties dialog, select Settings (tab) > Advanced (button).
  3. Select Adapter (tab) > Properties (button).
  4. Select Driver (tab) > Uninstall (button).
  5. Follow the instructions to uninstall the driver, then reboot the system.
  6. When the system restarts, Windows XP or 2000 will automatically reinstall the system display driver. If you are running Windows NT you will need to reinstall the display driver manually - from the installation CD or downloaded file.
  1. Re-install ZoomText and reboot the system.
  2. Re-install JAWS and reboot the system.

Note: The presence of other screen magnifiers/readers and remote control programs (e.g. PC Anywhere or Remotely Possible) can also result in similar error conditions. If you plan to install ZoomText on a Windows XP, 2000 or NT 4.0 system containing these types of programs, contact Ai Squared technical support for information on how to install ZoomText for co-existence with these programs.
