KB: Video corruption when running ZoomText with QuickTime 6.0 through 6.3

KB#: 056
Last updated: February 27 2006

The information in this article applies to:

  • ZoomText 9.0
  • ZoomText 8.1 and 8.0
  • ZoomText Xtra (version 7)

PROBLEM

When running ZoomText with QuickTime Player versions 6.0 through 6.3, ZoomText's magnified view may become corrupted. For example, unmagnified objects (video, pictures and graphics) may appear in front of ZoomText magnified view. As you move the mouse over these objects, they are erased.

CAUSE

QuickTime uses advanced video technology to optimize video performance. This technology bypasses the video operations processed by screen magnifiers.

SOLUTION

This problem can be resolved by upgrading to QuickTime 6.4 (available for download from QuickTime website: http://www.apple.com/quicktime/download/) or by configuring QuickTime 6.0 through 6.03 to use standard video technology.

To configure QuickTime to use standard video technology

  1. Exit ZoomText.
  2. Start QuickTime 6.
  3. Choose Edit > Preferences > QuickTime Preferences.
  4. Choose 'Video Settings' from the combo box (located at the top of the QuickTime Settings dialog).
  5. Select the radio button labeled 'Safe Mode (GDI Only)'.
  6. Select the X in the upper right corner to close this dialog box.
  7. Start ZoomText. QuickTime will now run without corruption.
