KB: Word and Excel documents not read when opened in Internet Explorer or embedded in another document

The information in this article applies to:
- ZoomText 8.00 through 8.03
PROBLEM
ZoomText's reading tools (AppReader, DocReader or Text Reading) are not
reading Microsoft Word and/or Excel documents when they are opened in
Internet Explorer, or when they are embedded objects within another
document.
CAUSE
Currently, ZoomText's reading modules do not recognize Word and Excel documents when they are opened within Internet Explorer or embedded in another document.
WORK AROUNDS
To read these documents they must be opened in their own instance of their native application. Below are instructions for the most common scenarios.
To open a Word document that is embedded in a Word or Excel document
- Click on or select the embedded Word document object.
- In the menubar, select Edit > Document Object > Open.
To open an Excel document that is embedded in a Word document
- Click on or select the embedded Excel document object.
- In the menubar, select Edit > Worksheet Object > Open.
To selectively open online Word documents in Word (rather than Internet Explorer)
- Locate the hypertext link for the document you wish to view.
- Right-click on the link and select Save Target As...
- Choose a filename and location on your system for downloading and saving the Word document.
- Once the file download is complete the downloaded file will automatically open in Microsoft Word.
To open all online Word documents in Word (rather than Internet Explorer)
- Open the Windows File Explorer.
- Select Tools > Folder Options... > File Types (tab).
- In the 'Registered file types:', locate and select the item: "DOC Microsoft Word Document".
- Select the Advanced button.
- In the Edit File Type dialog box, uncheck "Browse in same window", then click the OK button.
- With these changes completed, online Word documents will now automatically open in Microsoft Word (rather than Internet Explorer).
To selectively open online Excel documents in Excel (rather than Internet Explorer)
- Locate the hypertext link for the document you wish to view.
- Right-click on the link and select Save Target As...
- Choose a filename and location on your system for downloading and saving the Excel document.
- Once the file download is complete the downloaded file will automatically open in Microsoft Excel.
To open all online Excel documents in Excel (rather than Internet Explorer)
- Open the Windows File Explorer.
- Select Tools > Folder Options... > File Types (tab).
- In the 'Registered file types:', locate and select the item: "XLS Microsoft Excel Worksheet".
- Select the Advanced button.
- In the Edit File Type dialog box, uncheck "Browse in same window", then click the OK button.
- With these changes completed, online Excel documents will now automatically open in Microsoft Excel (rather than Internet Explorer).
