KB: System crash when exiting JAWS 5.0 while ZoomText 8 is running

• ZoomText v8.xx and JAWS 5.0 (build 812)

PROBLEM

When running ZoomText 8 with JAWS 5.0 (build 812), if you exit JAWS before ZoomText the system will crash, resulting in a blue screen error or instant reboot.

CAUSE

This problem is caused by errant system hooking implemented in JAWS 5.0 (build 812).

WORKAROUND

To avoid this problem, always start JAWS 5.0 before ZoomText 8, and always exit ZoomText 8 before JAWS 5.0.

Note: Freedom Scientific (makers of JAWS) is currently working on a full solution to this problem that will allow starting and exiting of ZoomText and JAWS in either order. This solution will be available in a forthcoming software update or maintenance release. Contact Freedom Scientific for further information.
