KB: “RPC error” or “Remote Procedure Call failed” in ZoomText Setup

PROBLEM

On systems containing Windows XP, 2000, or NT 4.0; if ZoomText version 7.06 or 7.1x exist on the system and you attempt to install ZoomText 8 (versions 8.00 through 8.10.x), an "RPC error" or "Remote Procedure Call failed" may occur during the setup procedure. This causes the Setup program to exit without completing the installation of ZoomText 8.

Note: This problem does not occur when installing ZoomText 8.11 or later from a product or trial CD.

SOLUTION

The problem can be resolved as follows:

  1. Before installing ZoomText 8, download and install the latest DCM Setup utility from: http://www.zoomtext.com/software/techsupport/Ai2DrvInst/Latest81Release/dcmsetup.exe.
  2. After installing the DCM Setup utility, install ZoomText 8.
