KB: Does ZoomText 8 support Windows XP Service Pack 2?

KB#: 088
Last updated: March 01 2006

The information in this article applies to:

  • ZoomText v8.0 and 8.1

The short answer is "Yes". ZoomText 8.0 and 8.1 are compatible with Windows XP Service Pack 2 (SP2). However, some users may encounter the following problems after updating to Service Pack 2:

  • Problem 1: On systems containing an Intel 828xx or ViaS3 video adapter, screen corruption may occur when running ZoomText. This problem can be resolved as follows:

For users of ZoomText 8.1x, this problem is resolved by installing the lastest ZoomText 8.1 update. The update can be obtained (free of charge) using ZoomText's Automatic Updating feature (enabled in the Program Preferences dialog). You can also download the update from Ai Squared's 'Updates' web page: http://www.aisquared.com/support/more/updates .

For users of ZoomText 8.0x, this problem is resolved by upgrading to ZoomText 8.1. The 8.1 upgrade can be purchased from Ai Squared or your local ZoomText dealer.

  • Problem 2: When you start ZoomText, the new Windows Firewall (installed by SP2) may display a dialog with the following message:

"To help protect your computer, Windows Firewall has blocked this program from receiving unsolicited information from the Internet or a network"

This dialog has three options: "Unblock this program", "Keep blocking this program", and "Keep blocking this program, but ask me again later". It is safe to select "Unblock this program", allowing ZoomText to run.

Note: This dialog appears in reaction to ZoomText's network discovery process (a component of ZoomText's copy protection). This process is completely harmless, and at no time compromises the security of your system or your data.

To identify your video adapter

  1. In the Windows Start menu, select Control Panel.
  2. In the Control Panel window, double-click Display.
  3. In the Display Properties dialog box, select the Settings tab, then click the Advanced button.
  4. A new dialog will appear that contains your video adapter settings. In this dialog, select the Adapter tab. The name and model of your video adapter appears in the box labeled Adapter Type.
