KB: Continuous reboot or BSOD after installing ZoomText or BigShot
KB#: 103
Last updated: March 01 2006
The information in this article applies to:
- ZoomText 9.0
- ZoomText 8.1 and 8.0
- ZoomText 7.1 and 7.0
- BigShot 2.xx
PROBLEM
On systems containing Intel 82845/65G graphics
adapters, after installing ZoomText or BigShot the system may crash on
startup, resulting in a perpetual reboot or blue screen critical error
window (a.k.a. “blue screen of death” or BSOD).
This
problem occurs due to conflicts with the Intel ‘IGFX Tray' applet, a
non-essential utility that provides access to the Intel configuration
and diagnostics application.
SOLUTION
To resolve this problem, disable the IGFX Tray applet in the Windows startup items as follows:
- Power up your system and immediately hold down the F8 key – until the system startup options appear.
- In the system startup options, choose Safe Mode.
- Uninstall ZoomText and/or BigShot.
- In the Windows Start menu, select Run…
- In the Open: text box, type: MSCONFIG
- Click the Ok button.
- In the System Configuration Utility, select the Startup tab.
- Under Startup Items, uncheck ‘igfx', ‘igfxtray' and ‘hkcmd' (any that exist).
These
startup items are non-essential and do not hinder the performance of
your PC, they are merely tray applications to help access functionality
present within the Display Settings window.
- Click the OK buttons.
- Restart your system.
- Reinstall ZoomText and/or BigShot.
Note: If you are using a USB keyboard, you will need to attach a PS/2 keyboard to complete this procedure.
