KB: Typing echo not working in Microsoft Word

KB#: 105
Last updated: March 01 2006

The information in this article applies to:

  • ZoomText v8.xx
  • Windows XP

PROBLEM

When typing text in Microsoft Word, ZoomText's typing echo (if enabled) may fail to echo characters and words as they are typed. This problem is caused by one or more of the following:

  • The cursor blink rate is set to None
  • On a Windows XP system; Windows Hotfix #KB840987 has been installed(note that this specific hotfix has been replaced by a different number by Microsoft, although the circumstances are the same).

SOLUTION

To resolve this problem, do the following:

  1. Update ZoomText to 8.13 - http://www.aisquared.com/support/updates.cfm.
  2. Update Windows XP to Service Pack 2:
You can obtain Service Pack 2 from the Windows update website: http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com.
  3. Make sure that your cursor blink rate is not set to None as follows:
    1. In the Windows Start menu, select Control Panel.
    2. In the Control Panel window, double-click on Keyboard.
    3. In the Keyboard Properties window, select the Speed tab.
    4. Under 'Cursor blink rate', move the slider to the right, so that it's at least halfway between None and Fast.

Note: Faster blink rates will improve ZoomText's responsiveness when tracking cursor movement.

    5. Click OK.
