KB: Norton AntiVirus 2005 blocks ZoomText’s update wizard

KB#: 115
Last updated: February 27 2006

The information in this article applies to:

  • ZoomText 9.0
  • ZoomText 8.1 and 8.0

PROBLEM

Each time ZoomText's update wizard runs, Norton AntiVirus 2005 falsely detects ZoomText as a worm and prompts you to Permit or Block the application. ZoomText's update wizard is a harmless utility that downloads and installs available ZoomText updates. The update wizard does not transmit any private information or download and install malicious software.

SOLUTION

Allow ZoomText within Norton Worm Protection Settings:

  1. In Windows' system tray, right-click on the Norton AntiVirus system tray icon.
  2. In the menu, select Open Norton AntiVirus.
  3. Click on the Options button.
  4. Under the heading "Internet", select Internet Worm Protection.
  5. Click on the Program Controls button.
  6. Click on the Add... button.
  7. Navigate to the C:\Program Files\ZoomText 1.6.4 folder.
  8. Select the Zt.exe or Zt8.exe file, then click the Open button.
  9. Make sure Permit is selected in the drop-down menu, then click the Ok button.
  10. Click the next two Ok buttons to exit the Norton.

This should put ZoomText in the allowed list. If this does not work, please refer to symantec's website for more instructions on how to clear out the permit list: http://service1.symantec.com/support/nav.nsf/docid/2004091413133506.
