KB: Using the Adobe Reader 7.0 Accessibility Setup Assistant

KB#: 119
Last updated: February 27 2006

The information in this article applies to:

  • ZoomText 9.0
  • ZoomText 8.12.2 through 8.13
  • Adobe Reader 7.0

When running ZoomText 9.0 (or 8.12.2 through 8.13) with Adobe Reader 7.0, you can use the Adobe Reader Accessibilty Setup Assistance to configure Adobe Reader for optimum compatibility with ZoomText. When launching Adobe Reader 7.0 for the first time after installing ZoomText, a dialog will appear informing you that ZoomText has been detected on your PC. The assistant will then present the following dialogs, allowing you to configure Adobe Reader for optimal compatibility with ZoomText's reading tools. Recommended settings are also provided below.

Note: You can also open this wizard at any point by clicking on Help, Accessibility Setup Assistant.

Screen 1 of 5

  • Select "All Accessibility options”.

Screen 2 of 5

  • Leave “Use high contrast colors for document text” Unchecked (I found this high contrast setting to be problematic). We suggest you use the Zoom Text color settings option to adjust the color scheme.
  • Uncheck "Disable text smoothing". NOTE: With this Unchecked, text is smooth but has a shadow and the contrast is lower. With this checked, contrast is much better, there is no shadow, but the text is very jagged, especially as you increase the magnification. Suggestion: leave it checked if you use 4X magnification and below for better contrast.
  • Change Default Display Zoom to "Fit Width".
  • Leave the "Always use the keyboard selection cursor" checked.

Screen 3 of 5

  • Select "Infer reading order from document (recommended)". s(change this if the reading order is not correct for a particular document).
  • Leave "Override the reading order in tagged documents" unchecked.
  • "Confirm before adding tags to document" - optional

Screen 4 of 5

  • Leave “Deliver all pages only for small documents” checked.

Screen 5 of 5

  • Leave “Disable document auto-save” Checked
  • Leave “Re-open documents to the last viewed page” checked if this is what you want
  • Leave “Display PDF document in the web browser” Unchecked
