KB: Installation Hangs for ZoomText 7

The information in this article applies to:

  • ZoomText 7.10 and 7.11


PROBLEM

ZoomText installation hangs/freezes or does not complete installation successfully.

POSSIBLE SOLUTIONS

Selective Startup:

  1. Click on the Start button
  2. Select Run...
  3. Type the command below in the blank area next to Open:
    "msconfig"
  4. Click the OK button
  5. This will bring you to the System Configuration Utility in the General tab
  6. Click the radial next to Selective Startup
  7. Uncheck Load Startup Items
  8. Click the OK button
  9. Click the Restart button
  10. When the computer restarts a message box will appear stating that you have used the System Configuration Utility
  11. Check the box labeled "Don't show this message or launch the System Configuration utility when Windows start"
  12. Click the OK button
  13. Install ZoomText
  14. You can choose to go back to MSCONFIG and click on Normal startup to enable the startup items if needed.

Disk Cleanup:

  1. Double-click on My Computer
  2. Right click on your primary Hard Drive (usually Local Disk C:\)
  3. Left click on Properties
  4. Click on the Disk Cleanup button
  5. Check any unneeded items on the list – such as temporary internet files, temporary files and items in the recycle bin
  6. Click Ok
  7. Reboot the PC
  8. Install ZoomText

Disable AntiVirus:

Some anti-virus software (such as Norton Corporate) can interfere with the installation process. To disable, right-click on the system tray icon (next to the clock in the lower right hand corner) for your anti-virus software

  1. Left click on Disable
  2. Install ZoomText

L&H Realspeak was installed prior to ZoomText:

Remove L&H RealSpeak from the registry(note you may need to reinstall the application that first installed L&H since after doing this the synthesizer will not be available):

  1. Click the Start button.
  2. Choose Run.
  3. Into the Open box, type
    "regedit"
  4. Click the OK button.
  5. Double click HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE.
  6. Double click Software.
  7. Double click Voice.
  8. Double click TextToSpeech.
  9. Click Engine.
  10. With the word Engine highlighted, look at the right-hand section of the Window.
  11. There are two columns of information. The left-hand column is titled Name.
  12. Right click on L&H Realspeak.
  13. Left click on Delete.
  14. Click Yes.
  15. Install ZoomText.
