KB: Disappearing text in Word 2003 when JAWS or Window Eyes is installed

KB#: 133
Last updated: October 02 2006

The information in this article applies to:

  • ZoomText 9.00.1 or later
  • Microsoft Word 2003
  • JAWS 6 or Window Eyes 5

PROBLEM

In Word 2003, when viewing or editing a document in Reading Layout Mode, one or more of the following problems may occur:

  • Blocks of text may intermittently disappear. For example, when toggling between applications using the Alt + Tab hotkey.
  • Some characters and words may be compressed together or clipped.
  • Characters may not appear when typing.

CAUSE

These problems occur when JAWS or Window Eyes are installed on the system.

WORKAROUND

One possible work around is to choose an enhancement other than xFont in the Font Enhancements Dialog. This dialog can be accessed from the Magnifier menu.

Another workaround for this problem is to remove JAWS and/or Window Eyes from the system.
