KB: ZoomText hangs or crashes when running ZoneAlarm or eTrust EZ Firewall

The information in this article applies to:

  • Windows 2000 or NT4
  • ZoomText 9.0 and 8.x trials
  • ZoneAlarm (by Zone Labs)
  • eTrust EZ Firewall (by Computer Associates)


PROBLEM

On systems containing Windows 2000 or NT4, if ZoneAlarm or eTrust EZ Firewall are running, starting a ZoomText trial will cause the system to hang or crash. When this occurs a ZT.exe error message also appears.

This problem is caused by incompatibility between ZoomText's trial protection mechanism and the firewall software (ZoneAlarm or eTrust EZ Firewall).

SOLUTION

For ZoneAlarm users, this problem can be resolved by updating to the latest version of ZoneAlarm (version 6.1.737.000).

For eTrust EZ Firewall users, there is currently no known solution.

MORE INFORMATION

This problem does not occur after ZoomText 9.0 has been activated.
