KB: PC Crashes when clicking on “Virus Vault” button in AVG Anti-Virus software

KB#: 161
Last updated: April 24 2006

The information in this article applies to:

  • ZoomText 9.0x
  • JAWS 7.0 / 7.1
  • AVG Anti-Virus

PROBLEM

On systems containing ZoomText 9.0, JAWS 7.0 or 7.1, and AVG Anti-Virus software, if ZoomText is running and you click the "Virus Vault" button on the AVG program interface, the PC will crash and display a blue screen.

Note: This problem is related to the presence of JAWS 7.0 or 7.1 on the system.

WORKAROUNDS

There are two workarounds for this problem. Only one of these workarounds must be used to resolve the problem. Workaround 1 disables ZoomText's support for text rendered with gray-scale text smoothing, which is a contributor to this problem. Using this method may result in a loss of text clarity in some applications. Workaround 2 removes the JAWS display driver from the Windows display driver chain, effectively disabling JAWS, which is also a contributor to this problem.

Workaround 1 – Disable ZoomText's support for gray-scale text smoothing

  1. Right-click on the ZoomText icon located on your Windows desktop.
  2. In the pop-up menu, choose Properties…

The ZoomText 9.0 Properties dialog will appear.

  3. Click the Find Target... button.

The Windows Explorer will open to the ZoomText program folder.

  4. Double-click on the file: TestSupp.ini

The TestSupp.ini file will open in the Windows Notepad text editor.

  5. Under the [Mag Engine] heading, add the following line of text:

    EatGrayScaledTextOuts=0

  6. In the File menu, choose Save .

Changes to the TestSupp.ini file are saved.

  7. In the File menu, choose Exit .

Note: When using this workaround, some on-screen text may be slightly degraded.

Workaround 2 – Remove the JAWS display driver from the driver chain

  1. Right-click on the ZoomText icon located on your Windows desktop.
  2. In the pop-up menu, choose Properties…
  3. Click the Find Target... button.

The Windows Explorer will open to the ZoomText program folder.

  4. Double-click on the file: dcmutil.exe

The Display Chaining Manager will open.

  5. In the Display Chain window (left pane), click on the Jaws video driver: JAWSVID .

The JAWS driver will now appear in the Installed But Disabled window.

  6. Click the Remove button.
  7. Click on the Close button.
  8. Restart your computer.
