KB: Reading PDF documents with ZoomText 9.1
KB#: 210
Last updated: November 19 2009
The information in this article applies to:
- ZoomText 9.18.5 and later versions
- Adobe Reader 9.x
Our latest ZoomText version, 9.18.5, introduced new support for reading PDF documents in Adobe Reader version 9.1 and later. This support will allow ZoomText to read PDF documents that have their security setting "Content Copying for Accessibility" set to allowed, while "Content Copying" is set to "not allowed". ZoomText will not be able to read a PDF document that has both "Content Copying for Accessibility" and "Content Copying" set to "not allowed". ZoomText will prompt you to use a newer version of Adobe Reader if you are using an earlier version than Adobe Reader 9. To view the PDF document security settings, do the following:
- Open the PDF document in Adobe Reader 9.1.
- Open the File menu in Adobe Reader and select Properties. The Document Properties window will open. You can also get there by pressing Ctrl D on the keyboard.
- Click on the Security tab.
- In the Document Restriction Summary section you will find the document security settings for the PDF document that you have open.
- In order for ZoomText to be able to read this PDF document, "Content Copying for Accessibility" needs to be set to "Allowed".
- If "Content Copying for Accessibility" happens to be set to "Not Allowed", then you need to obtain another copy of this PDF document with this specific security setting set to "Allowed" instead.
To obtain maximum support for reading PDF documents, always make sure that you have the latest version of ZoomText installed:
- Automatic Updating With ZoomText's auto-update feature enabled (in the Program Preferences dialog), ZoomText automatically detects, downloads and installs the latest updates. Note: You must be connected to the Internet when starting ZoomText.
- Check for Updates Launches the ZoomText update wizard, which acquires available updates via the Internet. In the Windows Start menu, select Programs > ZoomText 9.1 > Check for Updates. Or from the Help menu in ZoomText, select "Check for Program Updates".
- Manual download and install You can download the 9.1x update from Ai Squared's web site: www.aisquared.com/support/more/updates.
Resolving Slow or freezing of AppReader/DocReader Startup issue in some PDF documents
In some large PDF documents, and in PDF documents that contain complex combination of text and images, AppReader and DocReader will take a long time to start that the system may appear frozen.
Solution:
- Open Adobe Reader 9 from the icon on the Desktop or from the Start menu, then Adobe Reader.
- Open the Edit menu in Adobe Reader and click on Preferences.
- Under Categories select Reading.
- Now on the right hand side in the Screen Reading Options section, change the Page vs Document setting to "Only read the currently visible pages".
- Click OK, and restart Adobe Reader.
We are currently working on fixing this issue in ZoomText. Make sure to stay updated to the latest version of ZoomText.
