KB: ZoomText compatibility with Internet Explorer Version 8

KB#: 500
Last updated: August 12 2009

The information in this article applies to:

  • ZoomText versions 9.18x and lower
  • Internet Explorer 8

PROBLEM

Due to modifications to Internet Explorer version 8 by Microsoft, any version of ZoomText 9.14 or lower will not be able to extract the text from it anymore. This means it will not be able to read text inside a web page in Internet Explorer version 8.

However, the 9.18 version of ZoomText will support IE 8 but all of the bugs are not yet complete at this time. We are working on fixes to these issues. And as soon as the fixes are ready, your ZoomText will notify you when the update is available for download. The release notes for the particular update will inform you of which issue was addressed in the update.

You will need to update or upgrade your ZoomText from any of the lower versions to the 9.18 version or higher, in order for ZoomText to be able to read the text inside IE 8. If you have the 9.1x version of ZoomText you just need to update it to the 9.18 version. If you have any version lower than 9.1x you will need to upgrade to the 9.18 version of ZoomText or higher.

SYMPTOMS

In addition to the above mentioned issue, these modifications to IE 8 have also caused the following behavioral changes to ZoomText:
  1. While in AppReader or DocReader, the reading order may jump across columns. This issue does not happen on all web pages.
  2. Some text on the web page may not be read.
  3. When ZoomText is reading the web page using AppReader or DocReader, it may jump to the top, and then come back down and continue where it left off.
  4. You may experience a premature end of document when using AppReader or DocReader.
  5. On rare occasions, you may encounter text corruption for a brief moment, or you might see the HTML code mingled within, or on top of, the text itself.
  6. While arrowing or tabbing through a web page, ZoomText may not follow the cursor like it did in previous versions of IE.
