KB: ZoomText compatibility with Java applications

The information in this article applies to:

  • ZoomText Express
  • ZoomText 9.18 (for added tracking support from previous versions)
  • ZoomText 9.04
  • ZoomText 8.13


PROBLEM

When running ZoomText with a java application, you may experience any or all of the following:
  • Screen corruption as you move the mouse ("mouse erasing")
  • No tracking while typing or tabbing
  • No typing echo while typing
  • No screen reading while tabbing

CAUSE

Java Access Bridge is a program that interfaces with java applications and accessibility products such as ZoomText. Depending on the level of Java Access Bridge compatibility of a particular java application, installing Java Access Bridge can eliminate the above issues.

SOLUTION

In order for ZoomText to recognize a java application, you must install Java Runtime Environment and then Java Access Bridge. How do I install these?

Java Runtime Environment (JRE)
  1. Go to www.java.com
  2. Select "Free Java Download" button
  3. Select "Run" button to install the latest Java Runtime Environment
Java Access Bridge
  1. Go to java.sun.com/javase/technologies/accessibility/accessbridge/index.jsp
  2. Select the link "Download Java Access Bridge 2.0.1"
  3. If a Security Information message comes up, Selet "Yes"
  4. Place checkmark in "I agree to the Software License Agreement"
  5. Select "Continue"
  6. If a Security Information message comes up, Selet "Yes"
  7. Select the "accessbridge-2_0_1.exe" link (you do NOT need to put checkmark in the box)
  8. Select "Run"
  9. Select "Run" to install it
  10. Follow the onscreen instructions

  • Java Access Bridge
  • Java (TM) 6 Update 17 (or latest version)
