“An error has occurred in the DCM chain”, when launching ZoomText Express.
PROBLEM
When launching ZoomText Express, the following error occurs: An error has occurred in the DCM chain.
CAUSE
This problem is known to occur for the following reasons:
* Screen rotation software such as Pivot Pro, EZ Tunes or Magic Rotation are installed on the machine. These programs interfere with ZoomText Express’ ability to communicate with its display driver.
* System settings have become corrupted in the system.
* Installed new video card in the computer
* Updated the video driver
SOLUTIONS
Solution for conflict with screen rotation software
Currently, the only solution for this problem is to uninstall the screen rotation software. Once the software has been uninstalled and the machine has been restarted, ZoomText Express should run as normal.
Solution for corrupted system settings
Resolving this type of problem may require assistance from Ai Squared technical support team. You can contact support via the form below. In some cases, you may need to contact your computer’s manufacture. At that point, the manufacturer might ask you to reformat the hard drive and reinstall the operating system from their recovery CDs.
Solution for a new video card has been installed
Run the installation procedure for the software that came with your new video card. If the software for the new video card is missing, you may need to download it from the video card manufacturer’s website, or you may need to contact them over the phone or via email.
Solution for the updating the video driver
For Windows XP: ZoomText Express will prompt you that it corrected an error in the DCM chain and you must restart the computer. Please do so and ZoomText Expressw ill work fine after that.
For Windows Vista: ZoomText Express will prompt you that it installed its driver and you must reboot your computer. Please do so and ZoomText Expresswill work fine after that. Sometimes it will prompt you to reboot the system twice before the changes take effect.
After installing ZoomText Express Adobe Reader 8 will start an Accessibility Setup Assistant dialog box.
PROBLEM
After installing ZoomText Express, when you start Adobe Reader 8.x the Accessibility Setup Assistant dialog box will open. This is an optional setup for Adobe Reader

ZoomText Express Express Activation Issues
Hide/Show Answer
ZoomText Express contains product activation technology designed to eliminate unauthorized use of ZoomWare, without imposing a burden on legitimate users. Product activation is a simple, straightforward and anonymous process that takes just a few seconds to complete when performed over the Internet.
Once you have installed ZoomText Express you can activate your copy at any time. Until you activate the software you may only use it for 30 minutes at a time. If you need more time to try all the features of ZoomText Express after your 10 minutes are complete you must restart your computer to obtain an additional 10 minute trial period.
Preparing to Activate ZoomText Express
To activate ZoomText Express you will need your ZoomText Express serial number. This serial number is provided with your purchased copy.
* If you purchased an electronic version of ZoomText Express from Ai Squared’s online store, your product serial number will be included in your purchase confirmation email.
* If you purchased a packaged version of ZoomText Express , your product serial number will be located in your ZoomText Express packaging in addition to your purchase confirmation email.
The Activation Process
Until you complete the activation process, each time you start ZoomText Express the activation wizard will appear. The wizard provides you with the option to activate ZoomText Express using your product serial number. When you are ready to activate ZoomText Express , follow the on-screen instructions to complete the process.
If an Internet connection is present, ZoomText Express will automatically complete the activation process online. If an Internet connection is not present, ZoomWare will display a message that it could not connect to the activation server. If this occurs you can activate ZoomText Express manually by following the instructions in the next section – “Activating ZoomText Express Manually”.
Activating ZoomText Express Manually
If the system you are attempting to activate ZoomText Express on does not have an Internet connection, the activation wizard will display a dialog box saying “Unable to connect to the Activation Server”. If this occurs you can still activate ZoomText Express manually as follows:
* Click on the link that says “Activate ZoomText Express Manually”. The Activate ZoomText Express Manually dialog box will open with the ZoomText Express serial number that you already typed and a six digit system code.
* Email both numbers, the ZoomText Express serial number and system code, to us via the support form below and we will email you back the activation code.
* Type this activation code into the Activation Code box and then click Next. A dialog box will open to confirm that you have successfully activated ZoomWare.
Too Many Activations
You can install and activate ZoomText Express on up to three computers (in accordance with the ZoomText Express Software License Agreement). Multiple activations are provided to accommodate individuals that use more than one computer; for example, a home computer, a work computer, and a laptop computer.
After you have installed ZoomText Express on three computers, attempting to activate ZoomText Express on additional computers will result in a dialog box saying “Too Many Activations”. If you have already activated ZoomText Express on three computers, you will have to transfer one of these activations back to the ZoomText Express activation server, which you can then use to activate ZoomText Express on the new computer.
To transfer your ZoomText Express software license
* From the ZoomText Express menu, select Product > Transfer Activation.
This action will launch the ZoomText Express Activation Wizard and guide you through the transfer process. This process will deactivate ZoomText Express on your current computer so that it can be reactivated on the new computer.
Resetting Activation Counts
Sometimes the activation process fails to complete successfully or an established activation fails and you are prompted to reactivate ZoomText Express . In this case, we will be glad to reset the activation slots for you. Please contact us via the support form below to clear your activations. You will need to provide your ZoomText Express product serial number.

Most accessibility programs install a chaining display driver that is always active, whether or not the accessibility program is currently running. When two or more accessibility products are installed on the same machine, there is the potential for compatibility problems with the accessibility programs. It is also possible that installing multiple accessibility programs may cause a crash when the system boots.
Newer versions of accessibility programs, including ZoomText Express, utilize DCM (Driver Chain Manager) to improve compatibility with other DCM compliant accessibility programs. If you are running other accessibility programs on your system, check with the manufactures of each program for compatibility information and upgrades recommended for improved compatibility with other accessibility programs.

Screen Corruption when running Windows XP, Office XP and Visio 2002

The ZoomText display driver was not being properly uninstalled in Windows 2000 if the uninstall program was run from the control panel. This problem has been fixed.
Internet Explorer 5.0 in Windows NT
When running Internet Explorer 5.0 in Windows NT, DocReader and the SpeakIt tool were unable to get text from IE. This problem was caused by a previous fix (in version 7.05) to support the display of certain graphics by Netscape. A new fix was added so that Netscape can display the graphics and ZoomText can get text from pages displayed by Internet Explorer 5.0.
Uninstalling TruVoice Speech Engine
When uninstalling ZoomText, some TruVoice speech engine keys were being left in the registry. This was intentionally done so that ZoomText 6.0 owners could try a trial version of 7.0 before committing to an upgrade. Even though the speech engine is password protected and no other application can use it, the presence of the registry information may cause other accessibility programs to crash. This key is now removed when ZoomText is uninstalled.
VideoInfo Menu Item
ZoomText ships with its own utility that displays information about your computer's video card and display driver. A link to this utility was added to the ZoomText start menu folder.

User Configurations on a Network
Site license versions of ZoomText now support "floating" user configurations. ZoomText automatically stores configurations on the network server, allowing users to access their configuration files from any workstation on the network. Each workstation running ZoomText still requires that the program be installed on it, but the configuration files are automatically associated with the user, based on their logon name. Network administrators installing site license versions of ZoomText should contact Ai Squared for complete details.
Starting ZoomText Minimized
A "Start ZoomText Minimized" checkbox has been added to the Advanced Options dialog box. If this option is checked, the ZoomText user interface will be minimized whenever the program is started. Clicking on the ZoomText button in the Windows taskbar will restore the ZoomText user interface. Remember to save the ZoomText configuration when changing the state of this checkbox.
VRAM Memory Allocation
The VRAM Memory Allocation checkbox in the Profiler dialog is no longer checked by default. With the vast majority of display drivers, VRAM memory allocation is no longer needed, due to a new technique in ZoomText that yields much better display adapter compatibility. In addition, ZoomText now starts up faster without the VRAM allocation.

With ZoomText running, some screen readers will no longer read correctly from the screen. This problem does not occur when "Screen Reader Compatibility" is enabled. Please note that this Profiler setting is disabled by default, because it can cause video corruption problems with a limited number of display adapters, including the Diamond Viper 550.

Custom Caret Definitions Now Used when ROP's Match
When a custom caret definition was added to the ZoomText configuration file and the new caret definition had a ROP (raster operation) that matched an existing ROP, the caret definition was being ignored. This prevented the user from defining caret definitions with the same ROP but different sizes. These caret definitions are now properly processed.
NT Driver Not Installed Now Properly Reported
If the ZoomText display driver was not properly installed in Windows NT, a "MagEngine Initialization Error" message was being displayed. The proper error message, "ZoomText Display Driver for NT not Installed", will now appear.
DocReader No Longer Modifies Text Colors
If a custom foreground and background text color was selected in DocReader, ZoomText would change the foreground colors if it determined the colors were low-contrast. Microsoft released Internet Explorer 9 earlier this year, which included support for HTML5, Direct2D and other new hardware acceleration technologies designed to increase the speed and performance of Internet Explorer. These new technologies bring new challenges for accessibility programs like ZoomText. More specifically, these technologies will have crippling adverse effects on ZoomText’s xFont, tracking and screen reading features. Therefore, at this time we are advising ZoomText users not to install or upgrade to Internet Explorer 9, as doing so will result in a loss of ZoomText functionality within Internet Explorer, and possibly a decrease in personal productivity. We do want to assure you that we are working on overcoming these problems and will provide a solution as quickly as possible.
In the meantime, we encourage users who want to use Internet Explorer to downgrade their machines to run Internet Explorer 8. You can follow these instructions.
You’ll need to stop Internet Explorer 9 from loading again via automatic updates by downloading this tool: Block Internet Explorer 9 Automatic Update
Mozilla’s latest releases of Firefox include support for HTML5, Direct2D and other new hardware acceleration technologies designed to increase the speed and performance of Firefox. These new technologies bring new challenges for accessibility programs like ZoomText. More specifically, these technologies will have adverse effects on ZoomText’s xFont technology.

Below is a list of updates for Ai Squared’s software products. You can download the update to your hard drive and then run the update. If you need to install the update on another computer, you can save the download to a CD-R but you need to copy the update file from the CD-R to the hard drive of the computer you want to install it on before running it. Executing these update files directly from a CD-R may result in an incomplete update and subsequent problems when running ZoomText.

Product activation is an anti-piracy technology designed to verify that ZoomText has been legitimately licensed.
The activation process verifies that the serial number is legitimate and has not been activated on more computers than allowed by the ZoomText Software License Agreement.
If you don’t activate your product by the 60th day (after installation), ZoomText will stop working until you activate it.
Product activation will only fail under exceptional circumstances. In most cases, you can reactivate ZoomText as quickly and easily as the original activation. If your attempt to reactivate fails, contact Ai Squared Product Support for help.
If you need to reformat your hard drive or upgrade your Windows operating system, you should first transfer your ZoomText software license back to the ZoomText activation server.
Note: You do not need to transfer your ZoomText license when installing Windows service packs and hot fixes.
Should you want to move your ZoomText software to a new computer, it is important that you first transfer your software license back to the ZoomText activation server. This preserves your software license so that it may be used to activate your new installation of ZoomText.
